What's New On-Site and Off
Last updated: 19 February 2011
Thanks to alert readers, I have fixed some broken links. Everything should work just fine now.
Weblog. I have begun an art and design weblog, "Confessions of a Postmodern Pre-Raphaelite", also available from the links above and to the left.
As of August 2010 I have finished a massive, total re-write of the website. Every page has been recoded and upgraded. Some of the URLs are now different, but everything that was on the site before is still here, and hopefully easier to navigate. I have also added many improvements, small and large, and some entire new sections and pages. I hope the new site is clear, easy to navigate, and helpful.
In one of those unexpected twists of life, I have provided several illustrations for the magazine Weavings: A Journal of the Christian Spiritual Life, put out by the United Methodist Church. They are nice people, and it's been interesting to deal with them.
My tempera painting, "Olympia" was featured on the cover of issue 11 of the fantasy literature magazine, "Black Gate". It's a terrific magazine, packed with well-written stories, informed reviews, and interesting essays. Please check it out; it's good stuff.

I participated a few years back in Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet, a public art project in Chicago from 2 June through September 2007. I painted a ginormous fiberglass globe with "Renewable Energy for Illinois" (which is largely wind power), in my own inimitable way. My globe was number 104 by Navy Pier, and my sponsor was Invenergy LLC, a wind farm and renewable energy company. I have a page about the globe on this website, and an article about my globe can be seen here.
I curated a show, "Otherworldly Chicago" at the University of Illinois at Chicago, featuring the paintings of Kathleen Eaton, James Mesplé, and myself, from April 11th to May 6th 2006. Click here to see some photos of the show.
Like philosophy? Greek mythology? Science fiction? See the site of my husband, Richard Garfinkle, science and science fiction author.
I'd like to put in a plug for my favorite bookstore ever. O'Gara and Wilson, Booksellers is an amazing, venerable secondhand bookstore in Chicago, a great place to look for rare old books and occasional odd ephemera and antiquities.
Pregnant? Safety Hazards!
There are common pigments, listed as "non-toxic", that can harm your unborn baby. Click here to read my paper on the unique safety concerns of pregnant painters. Learn which pigments are not safe to use.
And since it's been brought to my attention, pastel artists who deal with dusts should also be aware of these hazards.
